Frequently Asked Questions

What is intelligent document processing?

Intelligent document processing (IDP) is a technology that automates the end-to-end journey of a document, from the moment it enters an organisation to the moment its data is usable in a business system. A typical IDP flow covers:

  • Ingestion: Capturing documents via scan, web capture, mobile capture, API, single upload, or bulk upload.
  • Preprocessing: Cleaning, deskewing, denoising, and preparing documents for accurate extraction.
  • Classification: Identifying what type of document it is (e.g. bank statement, ID document, payslip, invoice, etc.) so the right extraction approach is applied.
  • Extraction: Pulling data out using OCR, LLMs, and other AI/ML techniques
  • Data manipulation: Validating, enriching, and structuring the extracted data.
  • Delivery: Returning clean, usable data to downstream systems or decision engines.

Unlike basic scanning or OCR, IDP understands the document’s context and content, not just its characters.

What is the difference between IDP and OCR?

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is a single component. It converts an image of text into machine-readable characters. OCR doesn’t know if it just read a name, an amount, or an address.

IDP is the full pipeline that OCR sits inside of. It combines OCR with document classification, layout understanding, AI/LLM-based extraction, business rule validation, and data delivery. In short, OCR reads the text, IDP understands the document, classifies it, extracts the right fields with context, validates them, and turns them into decision-ready data.

What is the difference between structured and semi-structured documents?

Structured documents follow a fixed, predictable layout where fields always appear in the same place. Think application forms or ID cards with defined fields in defined positions.

Semi-structured documents have a recognisable format but with variation between issuers; bank statements, invoices, and payslips fall here, where the general layout is familiar (e.g., a “transactions” section, a “totals” line) but the exact position, headers, and formatting differ from one bank or supplier to the next.

These are the two document categories Sybrin IDP is purpose-built for, and IDP applies the right extraction technique depending on how the document is structured.

What types of documents can intelligent document processing handle?

Two document types are extensively used and proven within Sybrin’s existing solutions:

  • Bank and financial statements: Used within Digital Onboarding and instant loan origination use cases.
  • Identity documents (national IDs, passports, driver’s licenses: Used within Digital Onboarding and Identity Verification solutions.

Beyond these, IDP can be extended to other document types such as payslips, invoices, application forms, utility bills, or contracts on a case-by-case basis, configured to the specific business use case a customer needs. Both digital-native files (PDFs, exports) and physical documents (scanned or photographed) can be processed.

Can Sybrin IDP process custom document types?
Yes. Beyond the extensively used bank/financial statement and identity document flows, Sybrin IDP is configurable rather than locked to a fixed set of templates. New document types like a specific bank’s statement layout, an internal company form, a regional ID format can be onboarded and taught to the system on a case-by-case basis, tailored to the customer’s specific use case, so the platform adapts to an organisation’s real document mix instead of forcing documents into a generic template.
How does Sybrin IDP improve document processing accuracy?

Accuracy comes from combining multiple techniques rather than relying on one:

  •  Preprocessing improves image quality before extraction even begins.
  • Multiple extraction techniques (OCR, LLMs, and rules-based methods) are applied and cross-checked depending on the document type.
  • Business rule validation catches inconsistencies (e.g., a total that doesn’t match its line items, or a date that falls outside a valid range).
  • Human-in-the-loop review routes only low-confidence extractions to a person, instead of manually checking every document.
  • Continuous learning improves recognition of new formats and edge cases over time.

This layered approach means accuracy isn’t dependent on any single technology getting everything right.

Can Sybrin IDP integrate with existing business systems?
Yes. Sybrin IDP is API-based, so extracted and validated data can flow directly into core banking systems, loan origination platforms, CRM, case management tools, or any downstream business system. It’s designed to slot into existing workflows and the wider Sybrin Platform (including case management) rather than operate as a disconnected, standalone tool.
What makes Sybrin's IDP different from other document processing solutions?
Sybrin IDP isn’t a single-technique tool,  it’s a full pipeline covering ingestion, preprocessing, extraction, and data delivery, purpose-built for regulated, high-volume industries like banking and financial services. Rather than committing to one extraction method, it blends OCR, LLMs, and rules-based techniques, choosing the right approach per document type. It’s also built as part of the broader Sybrin low-code Platform, so IDP output connects directly into case management and business workflows (such as transaction monitoring or onboarding) instead of sitting in isolation. Real-world use cases – like turning a loan applicant’s bank statements into an affordability-ready quote in minutes, or verifying an identity document with liveness checks during onboarding – are built directly into the product rather than left to custom integration.
How can IDP reduce manual data capture and improve processing accuracy?
Manual capture is slow and error-prone because a person has to read, interpret, and retype data by hand for every document. IDP replaces that with automated ingestion (scan, upload, API, bulk upload) and automated extraction, so data is captured once, correctly, and consistently,  regardless of document volume. Business rule validation flags anomalies immediately rather than after the fact, and only the documents that genuinely need human judgment are routed to a reviewer. The result is faster turnaround (e.g., minutes instead of days for a loan quote) and fewer of the transcription errors that come with manual keying.

Does Sybrin IDP enable extraction of signatures and comparison against what is stored?
Sybrin IDP can extract signature images from a document as part of the document capture process, isolating the signature region for downstream use. For example, to store it, display it for manual review, or pass it to a separate verification system. Sybrin IDP does not perform automated signature comparison/matching itself.
Is data extracted by Sybrin’s IDP secure?
Documents and extracted data are handled within Sybrin’s secure processing environment, with data in transit and at rest protected through standard encryption practices. Access to documents and extracted data is controlled and auditable, and processing can be deployed to align with an organisation’s own data residency and hosting requirements (on-premise, private cloud, or hybrid). Sybrin is ISO 27001 certified.
Is Sybrin’s IDP suitable for regulated industries like banking and financial services?
Yes. IDP is built with the controls regulated environments require: audit trails of what was extracted and by what method, validation against business rules, and human review for low-confidence results, all of which support compliance and audit requirements common in financial services.
