Frequently Asked Questions

What is cheque processing?

Cheque processing is the process of receiving, validating, clearing, and settling cheque payments between financial institutions. Modern cheque processing combines digital capture, image exchange, validation, and automated workflows to reduce manual handling, improve accuracy, and accelerate settlement.

Are cheques still used by banks?

Yes. Although digital payments continue to grow, cheques remain an important payment method in various countries and industries. Many financial institutions continue to modernise cheque processing through digital image exchange and automated clearing rather than relying on manual paper-based processes.

How do banks detect fraudulent cheques?

Banks use a combination of image analysis, signature verification, account validation, business rules, and manual review to identify potentially fraudulent cheques. Modern cheque processing solutions can also integrate with fraud detection systems to improve risk management.

What is cheque truncation?

Cheque truncation is the process of replacing the physical movement of paper cheques with secure digital images and electronic data during the clearing and settlement process. Instead of transporting paper cheques between banks, cheque images and payment information are captured, verified, and exchanged electronically. This speeds up cheque processing, reduces operational costs, improves security, minimises fraud risk, and enables faster clearing while maintaining compliance with banking regulations.
Sybrin Cheque Truncation digitises physical paper cheques into electronic form for transmission to the paying bank. Clearing is completed using digital images, data matching and verification.

Can Sybrin’s Cheque Truncation integrate with existing banking systems?

Yes. Sybrin integrates with core banking systems, payment platforms, clearing houses, archive solutions, and other enterprise applications through open APIs. This allows financial institutions to modernise cheque processing without replacing existing banking infrastructure.

Does Sybrin support both inward and outward cheque processing?

Yes. The solution supports outward cheque presentments, inward cheque presentments, inward cheque unpaids, outward cheque unpaids, and maintenance of system values.

What happens during outward cheque capture?

Outward cheque capture digitises paper cheques so they can be validated and processed electronically. A teller or maker can scan and capture a cheque or batch of cheques. The system can generate a virtual deposit slip, scan front, rear and UV images, validate MICR and customer data and perform duplicate validation against batch and historical cheque data.

Does Sybrin cheque processing include maker-checker controls?

Yes. Cheque workflows include maker and checker roles, allowing one user to capture and another authorised user to validate, approve, pay or cancel batches depending on workflow configuration.

How are Sybrin’s cheque accounting exceptions handled?

Cheque accounting exceptions can be routed to an accounting exception screen where authorised users review the cheque image, details, attempted accounting information and failure reason, then retry, cancel or manually resolve the item.

Can inward unpaid cheques be reconciled?

Yes. The system can reconcile incoming unpaid cheques against previous outward presentments. Matched items are routed to accounting, while unmatched items can be routed to an exception screen.
